Engineer Zlatan Bruchkov’s house on “Georgi Zhivkov” street remains buried behind taller structures. The structure, designed by him as his private residence in 1907, is impressive in terms of architectural.
Zlatan Stoyanov Bruchkov was born on December 25, 1869, in Svishtov. In 1888, he finished his secondary school at Gabrovo’s Real Gymnasium. He attended the Federal Polytechnic Institute in Zurich, Switzerland, and graduated in March 1892 as a civil engineer with a restricted focus in railway building.
Participated as a technical expert and manager in port and railway construction, as well as a shareholder and board member of commercial and manufacturing businesses and banks. From August 1901 to 1913, he served as the technical director of the Anonymous Joint Stock Company’s Varna port development project. He oversaw the building of the dock, port facilities, and “sea-lake” connecting canal before becoming the company’s liquidator.
He was elected Mayor of Varna on April 25, 1922. During his mandate, he focused on a plan for warm sea baths, replenishing municipal coffers, and lowering basic food costs. He is one of the initiators of the resumption of development on a new theater building.
He received the Order of Saint Alexander – IV and V class, the Order of Military Merit IV and V class, the Order of Civil Merit III class, and commemorative medals for the wars of 1912-1913 and 1915-1918.
He died on February 15, 1957, in Sofia.
