Vasil Levski (1837–1873), celebrated as the Apostle of Freedom, stands as one of Bulgaria’s most esteemed national heroes. Born in Karlovo, Levski was instrumental in the Bulgarian revolutionary movement opposing Ottoman rule. He imagined a liberated and democratic Bulgaria, dedicating himself to the relentless organisation of a network of revolutionary committees throughout the nation. Levski envisioned a future that transcended mere national liberation; he aimed to create a republic where ethnic and religious equality could flourish.
Although Levski was not directly associated with Varna in his activities, the city honours him as a significant figure in the Bulgarian fight for freedom. Following his execution by the Ottomans in 1873, his legacy permeated the nation, and Varna, along with numerous Bulgarian cities, has constructed monuments and named institutions in his honour, preserving his ideals of liberty and equality for future generations.
A new monument crafted from Armenian Tuff was unveiled in September 2023 in front of the Archaeological Museum of Varna.
