The original station had been in operation since October 26th, 1866, when the line between Varna and Rousse was opened.
The current Varna main railway station was built in several operational phases between 1908 and 1925, according to plans drawn up by architects Nikola Kostov and Kiril Marichkov in an eclectic style.
The interior design was influenced by Italy because they used foreign workers, as was the clock, which had a German mechanism that arrived in 1929 and set the overall station dominating appearance for the opening by H.M. Tsar Boris III.
Between 1883 and 1885, the station was a stop on the famous Orient Express; later, the station evolved into a key junction with lines to Sofia, Shumen, Karnobat, Dobrich Rousse, Plovdiv, and Pleven.
