The magnificent edifice of the old High school for boys, named after Bulgarian monarch Ferdinand Ist, is one of the few specimens of the so-called “Brick-Gothic” architecture in Varna. The exquisite tower was designed in 1885 by Austrian architect Friedrich Gruenanger and his technical supervisor, Bulgarian master builder Gentscho Kanev.
The three-story structure boasts a colossal façade as well as an aristocratic interior. There is no longer a school within the building; instead, the City Art Gallery of Varna “Boris Georgiev” is located there.
The attic’s interior is stunning, with its original wooden beams. Some of them still bear the inscription “Transilvania,” indicating their birthplace. This is now a hall where many classical and jazz events are held.
