The Grand Piano of Varna and its roll in the beginning of the 20th Century's cultural heritage transformation
Ref Number: 165
In the early 20th century, the French brand “Pleyel” was referred to be the pinnacle of pianos, comparable to that of a Ferrari. The exquisite grand piano was transported to Varna in 1926 to commemorate the inauguration of Bulgaria’s first music festival.
At that time in Europe, there had only been one or two festivals like this, and it still takes place today and known as “Varna Summer” festival.
The inaugural celebration was organised by a neighbourhood association. The letters addressed to the corporation “Cremona” regarding the purchase of the Royala are intellectually stimulating and emotionally moving.
The proposal suggested that by making a small initial payment and implementing an instalment plan tied to the funds received from festival attendees, they might progressively repay the debt.
Evidently, the civic artistic endeavour undertaken by the residents of Varna instilled trust in the corporation “Cremona,” resulting in the approval of the loan.
This is a mere demonstration of the patriotic fervour of the Bulgarians to regain their place in Europe with honour, following five centuries of Ottoman domination.
The grand piano is housed in one of Varna’s oldest intact structures, which operated as a jail for 12 years.
