The city of Varna was under siege from July to September 29, 1828, as part of the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-1829.
During the occupation of Varna by the Turkish army, Russian forces made an effort to besiege the city on June 28, 1828. However, they were defeated by the superior Ottoman army, resulting in the postponement of the siege.
In July, the Black Sea Fleet, led by Aleksey Greig, sent more men. In August, Emperor Nicholas I and the Guards Corps landed in the city.
In comparison 20,000 Ottoman forces defending the city, Adjutant General Menshikov pressed forward and led a siege with a force of 23,000 men and 170 artillery pieces under his command.
Omer Vryonis Pasha’s contingent of 20,000 troops was unsuccessful in their attempt to besiege the city. Instead, the Russians managed to seize the city, taking over 7,000 prisoners and capturing 140 artillery pieces.
Due to significant losses suffered in their summer conflict, the Russian military was compelled to withdraw from Varna and the Danube region until the next spring.
Where was this fortress and battle?
On examination of the painting “Siege of Varna in 1828” by Alexander Sauerweid (1836) portrays the Russian Imperial Army’s attack on the Ottoman Empire’s city wall fortress known as “Medjidiya Tabiya”. The fortress is believed to have been situated near the Sea Garden, close to the “Hotel Dimyat” in Varna, during the Russo-Turkish War.
The precise whereabouts are reportedly revealed by Professor Ivan Russev’s publication, “The Crimean War 1853 – 1856, the Atlas of Napoleon III and the Bulgarian Lands”, released in 2021.
According to Professor Ivan Russev’s book, the castle known as “Medjidiya Tabiya,” which played a crucial role in Ottoman defense, was situated near the Sea Garden in the vicinity of Varna’s “Hotel Dimyat.” By observing the picture, one can readily identify the accurate depiction of the Cape “Galata” on the horizon.
