Ref Number: 78
The Bulgarians famously overcame a Byzantine siege at Varna. Varna was the site of the conflict between 21 and 24 March 1201.
Varna was ruled by the Byzantines at the time, and Tsar Kaloyan and his brother Ivan Asen wished to continue the battle with them in order to free Bulgarian territory, including Varna.
Some of the most feared warriors in the Byzantine army guarded the city of Varna. The Bulgarians constructed a massive siege tower to cross the moat outside the fortress walls, and on day three, they were successful in their assault.
Historical accounts place the blame for the destruction of the walls and the deaths of the defenders in the moat on Tsar Kaloyan.
After the victory, Bulgaria and Byzantium signed a peace pact.
