The Sea Casino in Varna was built in 1928. The concept for the location came from numerous successful local mayors, including Petar Stoyanov and Nicola Popov.
When Varna began to emerge as a resort and tourist destination after World War I, the Town Hall hoped to construct a casino and a restaurant with a direct view of the sea.
The project was overseen by architect Jelyazko Bogdanov, who designed the facades in the Ar Deco style. Kiril Shivarov, a well-known Bulgarian sculptor, also added numerous plastic features to the allegorical composition – Aphrodite, Poseidon, and so on.
Unfortunately, due to a terrible fire in 1958, Sea Casino was reconstructed and enlarged according to the design of architect Minkov. The structure was afterwards renovated several times throughout the years. However, upkeep of the structure was discontinued in 1990.
Following the acquisition of the Sea Casino building by a new owner in 2015 – “Morska gradina Varna” – a new architectural project was created with the assistance of a wide range of specialists, and from 2016 until the end of 2017 a large-scale overhaul and reconstruction is being carried out, employing the highest quality modern architectural solutions and technologies, combined with classic materials such as wood, stone, and wrought iron. The building issued a permit for completed improvements at the end of 2017.
