A recent discovery unearthed during excavations for a new building
Ref Number: 181
Preliminary excavation works for a proposed new building in Varna uncovered a rare marble sculpture of a man from the Roman period.
The statue was discovered during construction work in an area of sandy deposits, outside the walls of the ancient city. It was promptly reported to the museum by construction contractor Georgi Kraychev.
The statue’s location was close to Primorski Boulevard, near the coasts low point on the beach. Archaeologists were taken utterly by surprise by the location according to Dr. Vasil Tenekejiev from the Regional History Museum. “This is not where a statue of this caliber should be and has been buried there rather than being on display in a prominent spot in the city.”
The sculpture is in very good condition, having been preserved by the sand. It depicts a bearded man wearing a Roman toga. The inscription on the statue reads on first pass that of the name Gaius Marius Hermogenes and is dressed in a Roman toga.
This sculpture has been tentatively dated somewhere between the second and third centuries. Preparations are underway to clean and repair it, after which it will be added to the museum’s display.
