This is Varna’s oldest avenue, named after Tsar Ferdinand I’s wife, Princess Marie Louise, and was built after 1897, when the ancient Ottoman barracks that were there were removed. This important boulevard in Varna was designed by engineer Pavel Karakoulakov and features a pedestrian section as well as several trees and flowers.
The town hall passed an ordinance requiring all future residences to have richly painted façade. The first private structures were built for the officers of the Varna Regiment, and afterwards, bankers, merchants, and architects built their own mansions. This European style avenue, known as the “Street of the Aristocrats,” is one of the outstanding examples of well-preserved Art Nouveau and Neo-Baroque architecture in Varna.
