Oldest Tree in Varna – Asparuhov

The plane ‘Platanus Orientalis’ tree at Varna, being is located over the Asparuhov Bridge and near the back of the shopping centre Lidl. The plane has existed since the time of the First Bulgarian Empire and is the oldest tree in the Varna region; it was planted in 977, making it 1046 years old.

It has multiple trunks with a girth of approximately 7.3 metres, though it may be wider depending on the precise method of measurement; its height was measured in December 2015 and was 15.50 metres.

It was nominated for ‘Tree of the Year’, by Maria Stefanova and the “Come As You Are club” children, and received the maximum number of votes in the online poll (1,593), and was awarded the title for 2022.
