The Varna Municipality building is a typical example of communist period ‘brutal, modernist’ architecture, built in 1981, it was planned as a joint headquarters for Communist Party and Komsomol city and district committees.
The architects Galina Peteva, Todorichka Petkova, and Angel Angelov started the project. Archt. Stefan Kolchev leads the building renovation.
Building plasticity has a huge influence. The main body’s tallest volume and minor volumes are balanced. Aluminium and thermo glass windows and plastic-shaped architectural concrete walls supported the suggestion. Marble, white concrete, and other materials were utilised inside. Vanko Ouroumov’s gigantic paintings hang from colourful ceramics in prominent interior panels.
