A lovely old stone church stands in the middle of Varna’s historical district. It was once a Greek Orthodox church, but it is now a Bulgarian Orthodox church. It was designed by a local architect, Janko Konstandis, and erected in 1865.
Paraskeva Nikolau, a wealthy trader from Varna, came up with the idea. He moved to Odessa in the Russian Empire, where he made a small fortune. He donated a considerable sum of money for the construction of a hospital and a church in Varna in his last will and testament.
The Saint Nicolas church was the largest Christian temple in Varna at the time, as well as the headquarters of the Greek Metropolitan Church in the area. After 1912, it was converted into a Bulgarian church. The temple is a stunning stone masterpiece in the Neo-renaissance style of the Eastern Mediterranean. This church is an iconic image for the center of Varna, with arched windows, stone columns with capitols, and a basilical hall in the Roman style.
