Before the Second World War, “Preslav” str. was the major thoroughfare of Varna, with many banks, stores, and hotels opening after 1878. With the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman authority, several European countries established consulates in Varna, and many European businessmen, architects, engineers, and others settled there.
The majority of these newcomers were French, Italians, and few Germans; yet, there was no Catholic church where they could openly practice their religion. The Bulgarian prince Alexander I laid the cornerstone for this Catholic Church in 1885.
Rudolpho Valentino, an Italian architect, created the design. He designed a Neo-Gothic church with a single apse and a spire bell tower. This temple’s original interior was embellished with a marble altar, semi-columns, and crossing arches.
The church was shuttered during the Communism period and fell into decay. It has been totally restored to its former splendour and is now dedicated to the “Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary” since 2013.
