A majestic monument, the Captain Petko Voyvoda Monument pays tribute to one of the most revered national heroes of Bulgaria, Captain Petko Voyvoda. Elevated above the bustling city of Varna, this magnificent structure showcases the intricate designs that have long been an integral part of the region’s cultural heritage. Many locals and visitors go to see the monument dedicated to Captain Petko Voyvoda, who was a hero for his courageous leadership throughout the Balkan Wars. The exquisite architecture of the monument speaks eloquently about the era it represents and is a sight to behold for visitors.
Sculptor Soloveia Lenkova spent around three months in 1958 working with Prof. Dalchev on the memorial’s clay sculpture. They delegated the task of creating to stonemason Kolyo Bratsiklikski as soon as they touched down in Varna. Architectural master Zhechko Cholakov conceived of and executed the pedestal. The construction of the semicircular site and monument in the neighborhood garden behind the District Hospital was finished on February 18. Amidst a grand procession and festivity, the monument honoring Captain Petko Voivoda was dedicated on June 14, 1959.
The memorial was moved to the grounds of the reconstructed Thracian House in 1975 and is still there today. The area is beautifully landscaped, making it an ideal spot for quiet contemplation. You can capture stunning shots of Varna’s beautiful cityscape as you stroll around the monument. Additionally, the venue serves as a focal point for community gatherings and activities, which commonly unite people in honor of Bulgarian heritage and history.
Petko Voivoda encountered Giuseppe Garibaldi during his 1866 Italian visit; the two men stayed at Garibaldi’s villa and recruited the famed “Garibaldi squad” of 220 Italians and 67 Bulgarians who fought in the Cretan Uprising. On Gianicolo Hill in Rome, close to the one dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi, another monument commemorating the voivode, author Professor Valentin Starchev, was installed on December 2, 2004, in commemoration of his 160th birthday.
In addition to learning about Captain Petko Voyvoda’s contributions to Bulgaria, visitors can experience the local culture firsthand by exploring the monument. A great place to stop along the way in Varna, the streets are dotted with restaurants, shops, and attractions.
