Varna, Bulgaria’s third-largest city and marine capital, is a historic city. It has a rich history spanning millennia, showing several cultures and civilizations.
The city’s history may be traced back to prehistoric times. The world’s oldest processed gold was discovered at the Varna Necropolis, a prehistoric burial site in Varna dating from 4600-4200 BC. These artifacts indicate the Copper-Stone Age’s affluence and great culture.
During the period of the ancient Greeks in the 6th century BC, Varna (then known as Odessos) was a prominent commerce and maritime town. Later, under the influence of the Romans, the city expanded and flourished even more in the first century AD, becoming a key center for trade and culture.
During the Byzantine Empire, Varna was an important military and administrative hub, contributing to the territorial conflicts between the Byzantine and Bulgarian Empires. The Battle of Varna in 1444, and subsequently the Ottoman takeover, impacted the city’s history for nearly four centuries until the late nineteenth century. Varna was renowned as a significant port and craft center during this time period.
During the Russo-Turkish War in 1878, Varna was freed from the Ottoman Empire and included into the newly independent Bulgaria. In the twentieth century, the city developed in importance as a coastal resort and the headquarters of the Bulgarian Navy. Today, it is a key economic, cultural, and educational hub, as well as one of Bulgaria’s most popular tourist sites.
