Boris Georgiev is considered as one of the most important artists in Bulgaria and is known for creating work that is connected to the symbolic movement that emerged in Bulgaria between 1900 and 1930.
Boris was born Born in Varna on November 1st, 1888, his father found work as a tailor in Russia, prompting the family to move there in 1902. During his time at the Art School of the Society for the Promotion of Art in St. Petersburg, Russia, from 1905 to 1909, he had the privilege of being taught painting by the renowned Russian artist Nikolai Roerich. In 1909, he joined the painting program at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, where he received training from Angelo Yak and Peter von Holm, two highly esteemed artists in Germany.
After completing school, he embarked on a journey, exploring the beautiful landscapes of Italy, France, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, Greece, Spain, and Morocco. After his return, he found a peaceful haven in the majestic Italian Alps alongside his sister Katya, who had accompanied him during the years 1914-1917. I find the city to be too confining for my creative process. Boris Georgiev suggests that spending time in the mountains enhances one’s connection to the inner beauty.
Italy was the backdrop for his most breathtaking creations. His sister Katerina joined him on his global journey. She died at a young age in 1917, and he mourned her loss profoundly. She often appeared in his paintings as an ethereal figure. In 1922, he returned to Bulgaria.
The inaugural solo exhibition was held in Varna in 1923 at the former Girls’ High School, which has since been transformed into the Archaeological Museum. From 1928 to 1942, he showcased his artwork in numerous prestigious exhibitions held in Venice and other international locations. Following his move to Italy, he continued to thrive in his profession and gained further recognition in the art industry.
Albert Einstein, the brilliant physicist, and Georgiev crossed paths during Einstein’s visit to Berlin in 1928. Later on, with the assistance of Einstein, the “Schulte” gallery in Berlin organized an exhibition showcasing Georgiev’s artwork. Georgiev created a captivating portrait of the esteemed physicist and presented it to Einstein in person, bringing him immense joy.
During his 1931 visit to India, he had the honor of meeting several esteemed individuals, such as Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore (who extended a personal invitation), Jawaharlal Nehru, Princess Nilufar, Pandit Malaviya, Durre Shewar, and many others. During his journey through the Himalayas, he had the fortunate opportunity to meet Nikolai Roerich, who would become his spiritual teacher. His landscapes, portraits, and figure compositions were deeply influenced by the rich cultural and religious traditions of India, as well as the captivating world of Hindu mythology.
In 1936, he returned to Bulgaria. Following another visit to Rome, he embarked on a journey to Brazil in 1952 and resided there for a period of four years. It was during this time that he achieved significant artistic recognition. Georgiev resided in Italy until his passing in 1956.
Boris Georgiev takes pride in showcasing his hometown of Varna by always signing his paintings as “Boris Georgiev di Varna.”
Boris Georgiev died of stomach cancer on 04/09/1962 in Rome. The funeral was held in the Russian Orthodox Church, and according to his wish, he was buried with his beloved sister Katya in Florence, the inscription on his gravestone remained unchanged even after his passing.
In Bulgaria, the artist was largely overlooked for a considerable period. In 1990, the Art Gallery was named after Boris Georgiev through the efforts of Kostadin Chobanov and with the approval of the Municipal Council of Varna.
