In Varna’s Sea Garden, on the beachfront, sits the monument to the border guard with pride.

A former border post, this location was used by border guards; it was close to the Natural History Museum. The commanders and men of the XV frontier group were besieged by an unrelenting torrent of enemy fire in September 1916, in the middle of the First World War’s chaos.

In 1917. A monument to the brave troops and officers of the XV border group, who gave their lives to bring the Fatherland back together, was now under construction. On top of the pillar stood a marble eagle, skillfully sculpted by Kiril Shivarov, with its wings gracefully gathered, just as architect Evgeni Diakovich had envisioned. The Eagle Monument is the name given to the structure during this time period.

A “Border featuring a Dog” was installed in lieu of the sculpture arrangement sometime about 1922. Names of individuals who died in the conflict are inscribed on three façade of the post office. The places where the border guards perished are listed on the back of the marble slab sculpture: Chaushky, Botevo, Vladimirovo, Dobrich, Gelendzhik, Enige-haidar, Toprak Hisars, Pervelli, Tatlaja-kyuy, Tuzla, Mangalia, and Kyustendja.
