Ref Number: 147
Anton Jan Novak, also known as Antonin, was born on December 7, 1860, in Vinorzh, a hamlet located in the Austro-Hungarian Empire (now within the jurisdiction of Prague, Czech Republic). His parents were Jan and Lyudmila Novak.
He finished his elementary schooling in his hometown. He matriculated in the Zemsky Institute of Pulmonology in Prague after finishing his secondary school. Under the auspices of Emperor Franz Joseph I, I undertook military duty. He took on the role of a teacher at the identical institution. Following a period of three years, he was sent to specialize in Vienna.
He was invited to Bulgaria by the archaeologist Karel Shkorpil, who was under the control of Mihail Koloni, the mayor of the Varna municipality. In the year 1892, the individual in question established the Tarnovo City Garden, beside the Municipal Nursery located in Veliko Tarnovo.
Under the directive of the municipal administration of Varna, he initiated the development and execution of a project aimed at establishing one of the most expansive urban parks in Bulgaria. Demonstrating a strong commitment to his given duty, the site is promptly cleaned and mapped. Intended for the first cultivation of uncommon flora. Valuable timber and flower species were transported via carts from many locations, including Longosa, Strandzha, Constantinople, and the Mediterranean region. Notable examples include elm, linden, chestnut, ash, and several others. In 1899, as a result of Novak’s significant engagement, the municipality constructed a residence for him in close proximity to the entrance to the Sea Garden (now situated adjacent to the Radio Varna building).
Novak’s contributions extended beyond the establishment of the Sea Garden of Varna, encompassing the design of various gardens within the city. These included the City Garden, situated between the two theater buildings, as well as the parks affiliated with the Vladislav Varnenchik Museum and the Girls’ High School (now known as the Regional History Museum). Additionally, Novak was responsible for the landscaping in the vicinity of the churches and the streets of the city.
On January 8, 1945, he passed away.
Presently, a commemorative structure dedicated to his legacy is observable within the Sea Garden. Furthermore, during the spring of 2009, the plaza including the colonnade connecting the central entrance of the Sea Garden and the Festival Complex was officially designated with his name.
