The Aladja Monastery is located in a lovely area 3 kilometers from the Golden Sands resort. The medieval rock monastery was given the Turkish title “aladja,” which means “colorful, motley,” because of its beautiful paintings and maybe because it was housed in 60-meter-high colorful limestone rock.

The monastery’s original name was Holy Trinity. The first hermits arrived in the sixth century, while the caverns nearby had been inhabited since the New Stone Age. Early Christians sought sanctuary in caverns from Roman persecution in the second and third centuries.

Aladja Monastery’s actual story began in the early 13th century. It was a shelter for anchorites, devoted hermits who sought refuge from the harsh economics of feudalism by retreating far into the highlands in the 13th and 14th centuries.

The Monastery declined quickly when Bulgaria fell under Ottoman control and ceased to exist in the 17th or 18th century. It was discovered by chance some 80-90 years ago when a boulder collapsed, exposing the unique beauty to the human eye.
