The map, created by F.J.M. Maire in 1788, offers a comprehensive depiction of the battleground during the Russo-Turkish War of 1787-1792, showcasing the conflict between the prominent regional empires. The map, titled in both German and French, depicts the changing frontiers of three major empires: the Ottoman Empire, the Russian Empire, and the Habsburg Monarchy. More precisely, it examines the areas adjacent to the Black Sea, the Balkans, and Hungary, showcasing transformations that occurred between 1718 and 1788.
The map illustrates the gradual territorial encroachment of the Ottoman Empire by its dominant European counterparts. The depiction on this map conveys the notion that the Ottoman Empire is experiencing a collapse and is being progressively overwhelmed by increasingly powerful European adversaries. The map’s meticulous demarcation of boundaries vividly exemplifies the intricate and ever-changing depiction of empire. Distinct lines demarcate “real,” “historic,” and “local” borders, offering a nuanced perspective on territorial changes and geopolitical intricacies. The map further indicates travel routes.
