Galata Lighthouse (Inactive)

REF NR: 1732

Galata Lighthouse was established in 1913 (station established 1863) by the French company Compagnie des Phares de l`Empire Ottomane and it has been inactive since 1987. One of the oldest lighthouses on the Black Sea coast. On 26th of February 1998 a landslide collapses the building, along with a part of the restaurant, into the sea.

It is a 9 m round white tower with lantern and gallery. The light station was damaged by shelling from the Russian cruiser Empress Maria in 1915, during World War I, but it was repaired later after the war ended. Part of it has collapsed into the sea due to landslides.

This lighthouse was built to replace the old one built in 1863 when the new harbour was opened in 1906. When the new harbour begun to function in 1906, the lighthouse of the cape, was unsuitable for the navigation and for the serving of the bay. This was the reason for the building of a new contemporary lighthouse, which stands till nowadays.

In 1968 just next to the tower a panoramic restaurant called "Galatea" was built. On 26th of February 1998 a landslide collapses the building, along with a part of the restaurant, into the sea.
