The park known as “Asparuhovo” graces the quarter of the same name in the city of Varna.
On the 8th of October in the year 1934, within the esteemed office of Varna’s mayor, Stancho Savov, a significant decision was reached at the behest of Karel Shkorpil, the Director of the Varna Archaeological Museum.
This momentous agreement aimed to transform the arid expanse adjacent to the Asparuhova Val into a verdant park, alongside the construction of a monument honoring the valiant warriors of Asparukh and a bust commemorating Khan Asparukh himself.
A committee for organization was formed and a visionary design of the new park was crafted by the esteemed architect of the Sea Garden, Anton Novak, alongside Engineer Lubin Dimov. The spirited leader of the Eighth Primorski Infantry Regiment, Petar Dimkov, significantly contributed to the realisation of the concept.
In the early days of 1935, the design for the park’s entrance commenced with the creation of a distinctive portal. A mere hundred meters away, at the very onset of the rampart, stood a bust monument dedicated to Khan Asparukh, elegantly positioned upon a specially crafted pedestal.
The creation is attributed to the esteemed Varna sculptor, Kiril Georgiev. That very year, a grand sculptural representation of Asparukh’s warrior was unveiled at the heart of the rampart. Clad in his complete battle attire, he stands resolutely against the vast expanse of the sea. The sculpture was crafted by a distinguished artist hailing from Varna – Kiril Shivarov. Adjacent to the pedestal stands a column dating back to the Asparukh era, unearthed during the excavations conducted by the Shkorpil brothers in the year 1914.
The park’s grand opening took place on the third day of August in the year 1935. During the vibrant seasons of spring and summer, the park becomes a lively stage for a variety of cultural and musical gatherings.
