Strashimirovo Swamp

The Strashimirovo Swamp, also known as Yatata or Aladan Swamp, is a designated protected area located on the southern bank of the navigable canal that connects Lake Varna to Lake Beloslav. It is located 1 kilometer east of Beloslav and south of Strashimirovo.

Yatata, a marsh with luxuriant water-loving plants, has been changed into a sedimentation pond. The area supports a number of protected bird species, including the small cormorant, pink pelican, curly-headed pelican, little water bull, night heron, black stork, white stork, and others. The area is 154 hectares. On July 23, 1987, this region was established as a protected zone to conserve the natural habitats of rare and endangered bird species. It overlaps with the protected area established by the Flocks of Birds Directive.

Throughout the year, the region attracts a diverse range of bird species. There have been 208 bird species identified within its boundaries, 62 of which are included in Bulgaria’s Red Book. This site is critical to the survival of the stilt runner (Himantopus himantopus), the small water bull (Ixobrychus minutus), and the red heron (Tadorna ferruginea), all of which nest here. Every year, the place is blessed by the magnificent presence of flocks of white and black storks, as well as numerous bird of prey, as they soar through the sky on their journey.
