The sports club, known as the Heroes’ Gymnasium by locals and visitors alike (on Metropolitan Bishop Simeon Square, opposite the Cathedral), was established in the early 1890s. Apart from being an athletic center, the site held a number of cultural events, including the first opera performance (with Italian singers) in Varna after the Liberation (1878) in 1894, and the premiere of Bulgaria’s first symphony orchestra on June 2, 1912. In the 1920s, the Club held the Boys’ High School’s sports classes.
